How many of you remember your parents saying to you “If you friend jumped off a bridge, you’d jump too!”???  Sound familiar?  Did you do all the same things that your friend did?  Take the same classes, go to the same schools, wear the same clothes, go out for the same sports, buy the same kind of cars, live in the same neighborhoods and eat at the same restaurants?  Or, did you blindly follow their recommendations?  If it’s good enough for them, it certainly must be good enough for me!  Well, maybe not.

I can’t begin to share with you the amount of time folks come into my office and tell me that their friend, neighbor or sibling told them they needed the same Medicare plan they have.  And that would be fine – if you both have the same doctors, medications, illnesses, budget, mindset, lifestyle, etc.  You get the picture.  I find that no two people are exactly alike.  What works for one doesn’t necessarily work for the other.  And the good news is that there are many different Medicare plans to choose from. In Lee County alone, there are:

21 Medicare drug plans,

21 Medicare advantage plans,

11 standardized Medicare supplements, and at least

10 Medicare special needs plans – all offered by numerous different insurance companies. Who knew???

So now that we know we shouldn’t necessarily choose our plan based on someone else’s recommendation, how do we possibly make a choice when there so many plans to choose from?

Well, first of all, find yourself an independent agent that is licensed & appointed to offer more than one insurance company.  Make an appointment and be prepared to share with them as much information as they need to help you choose the best plan that’s available FOR YOU.  Information like:  what drugs do you take, what illnesses do you have, what doctors to you see, do you own a vacation home, what is your budget, do you have other coverage available through your past or present employer, do you qualify for Extra Help from the Federal government, do you have a Medicare Savings Program, do you qualify for FL Medicaid, do you plan to travel the USA in an RV?  These are ALL very important things to consider when choosing your plan.

You can’t just throw a dart at the wall and enroll.  Lucky for you, we treat you like the individual you are and help you every step of the way.  And, the consultation is free because the insurance company pays us to be your local agent. What could be better than that? It may have been fun to wear matching sweaters in high school, but that’s not the case Medicare plans in retirement.

Keep your sweaters, choose your own plan.
